Μονή Οσίας Ειρήνης μ.jpgHOLY METOCHION OF SAINT IRENE CHRYSOVALANTOU

The Monastery of Saint Irene Chrysovalantou is a Metochion of the Holy Monastery of Saint George of Ilia, which in 1990 was granted to another Sisterhood with Abbess Gerontissa Chrysovalanti.

It is built above the Camps of our Metropolis, between the seaside villages of Rovies and Ilia, and has in front of it the serene Euboean Gulf and behind it the lush Valantio mountain.

Apart from the internal Church of Saint Irene, the Monastery also has two other internal chapels: of Saint Onuphrius the ascetic, who is celebrated on June 12, and of Saint Job the much-suffering, who is celebrated on May 6. These chapels are adorned with wonderful Byzantine icons.

In the olive grove of the Monastery, the old Church of Archangel Michael, an old Metochion of the Monastery of Ilia, has been renovated, and it celebrates on November 8. Saint Archangel is considered the patron Saint of the area, which has taken its name from Him (Archangel of Ilia).

A large central Church of Saint Irene does not yet exist, as the small sisterhood does not have the financial means to complete the unfinished Monastery.

It is worth noting that the Monastery was the first of Saint Irene Chrysovalantou with the new (revised Julian) Calendar.
