ROVIES EVIA

The history of our village

Annas Papadopoulou

souris_(38).jpgAncient times.

In the northern Evian Gulf, where the Evian Gulf meets the Aegean Sea, lies the ancient city of Orobia, in the place where the ancient Orobies lived, with the settlement of "Herakleia" and the settlement of Pyrgos Orobion. The city was known during the Strabo era for the sanctuary of Selinountios Apollo (with a statue of Selino). The Orobies were destroyed by a great earthquake and a tidal wave in 425 BC according to the Peloponnesian War. The historian Thucydides describes how the earthquake caused the sea to rise, destroying most of the city and leaving only a few survivors.

The survivors fled to the mountains with their livestock and crops (cattle, sheep, goats). They were later able to return to the city, but the ruins of the Saracen pirates forced them to leave again.

pirgos_rovies.jpgByzantine times.

After the Fourth Crusade in 1204 AD, the Franks from the northern Europe, dominated Evia with the rule of the 13th century. In the 14th century, the Venetians took over. The Venetian castle (negro=black and ponte=bridge) was built on the ruins of the ancient city of Chalkis, and from there the whole island of Evia was controlled, with the exception of the Turkish and the surrounding areas (pirates). The Tower of Rovies was a pirate and military base. In the 15th century, after the conquest of Constantinople, the Moors of B' (from 1470) managed to conquer Evia and established their headquarters - the pirate base of the island. In Rovies, the tower remained a military and strategic base.

Turkish occupation

In the years of the Turkish occupation, the famous Greek hero of Evia was the Limniotis warrior Angelis Gobi, a syndropos and symbol of the Ottoman resistance in the region of Gravia.

The resistance was organized with the help of local leaders in Evia. Gobi (or Gobiinas), fought bravely and defeated the Ottoman army in the Battle of 1821 in Vrysakia. The Turks, however, managed to capture and defeat the Ionian of 1822 in Styra. The resistance continued with the help of Gobiinas in the battle of Martio in 1822.

The struggles of the local leaders, Nikolaou, Nikolaou Krieziti and Odysseas Androutsou for the region, led to the full occupation of the resistance in the middle of 1824. Evia remained under Turkish rule until 1833 (with the exception of the annexation of the Greek state).

A paragraph of the protocol of London in 1830, which recognized Greece as an independent state, mentions that the Turks are no longer the rightful owners of Evia and must return the lands to their rightful owners. However, Evia did not benefit from the Turks, but was liberated!!

In Evia, there is no significant industrial development. The Capodistrias state tried to create conditions for the Greek state to develop the island's resources. However, it was not possible to fully utilize the island's resources. The economic structure of the island was mainly agricultural and livestock-based. The "industrial" structure was in the Frangiko Tower of Rovies and other areas (villages, roads, bridges), the anikans.

After the Asia Minor Catastrophe of 1922, refugees from Marmara, settled in Limni, in Rovies and in Chrovnia. The refugees brought the economic and political development of the region.

With the collapse of the Venetian rule, in 1926, the island was liberated from the Ottoman rule and the islanders were able to return to their homes, their villages and their professions ('synoikismos'). They were able to return to the lands of the Venetian and Ottoman rule.

In the meantime, from 1905, a bi-communal charter (Oroviai AE) was established in the new town of Gerania, outside the city of Chalkis. The "ergostasio" was built in the period, outside the city of Chalkis, and was doubled in several places of the island from then until 2007, when it was destroyed.

In 1913, Antonis Papadopoulos, a descendant of the local family, built a double that was used as a base for the local resistance. He built a base for the local resistance: He built the base that was used as a base for the local resistance, and he built the political base of the local resistance of 2,500 square meters that was used. He built a base for the local resistance. He built a base for the local resistance.

Log? of the dynasties of the double in the ergostasio and in the local, they built a base for the local resistance and they built a base for the local resistance. The base of the Rovies was built by the refugees who brought political and economic development to the region.
